Safety technology is cumbersome and traditional - VDE Congress proves otherwiseThe third edition of the IEC 61508 series is eagerly awaited because there have been a number of innovations since the second edition and the environment has changed: After networking, which continues to advance and continues to stir minds, the use of artificial intelligence technologies and the application of blockchain will be discussed. Established development methods are also being questioned. In addition to tangible questions about standardization, these issues will also be discussed and possible solutions presented:

• Agile methods and secure systems. A contradiction in terms?
• Can functional safety management be secured by blockchain technologies in the future?
• Recent experiences with hacker attacks call for even greater coordination of functional security with IT security.
• When taking a holistic view of safety chains and estimating their probability of failure, mechanical elements repeatedly emerge as the most discussed points. Opinions in the community on how to deal with this are still quite controversial.
• The inclusion of artificial intelligence in security systems seems to be inevitable for the future, but no one yet knows how to provide proof of security.
